Generative AI can now write surprisingly good code. Give it a requirement, and it can generate functions, APIs, tests, database queries, and even entire application components in seconds. For everyday development, this can be incredibly useful.

But here's where I become a little cautious. 🤔

What happens when that code is going into software where failure isn't just a bug?

🏥 Healthcare systems
🏦 Financial platforms
✈️ Aviation software
⚡ Critical infrastructure
🔐 Security systems

In these environments, a small mistake can have consequences far beyond an error message on a screen. The interesting thing is that 

AI-generated code can look completely reasonable while still containing subtle problems.

As AI becomes more deeply integrated into software development, this is a question teams like 

 are increasingly going to encounter: how much responsibility should we give AI-generated code?

A developer might understand the generated code. But understanding it isn't necessarily the same as knowing that it is 

safe, secure, reliable, and correct for the specific environment. 

So should we avoid AI-generated code in critical software? I don't think the answer is that simple.

AI could actually help developers write tests, identify vulnerabilities, review code, find edge cases, and automate repetitive work. But perhaps the important distinction is: 

AI can help write the code. Humans still need to own the decision.

Maybe it's about building a development process where AI can contribute heavily—but every critical piece of software still goes through 

human review, testing, validation, security checks, and accountability.

Would you allow AI-generated code into a critical production system if it passed the same testing and review process as human-written code?

Or would you always require certain parts of critical software to be written and reviewed entirely by humans?
