Troubleshooting

I am using the new editor when this happens:

I'm having an issue with scenes not fading into one another duting transitions. I have my backgrounds set to black and transitions for all scenes set to fade. During preview and again with a finalized video the scenes do not fade, I just see the black backgrounds between scenes.

Also when adding media to a scene when I just want the media to display I check the layers and set the avatar layer to invisible but I get one of three results; 

One is that the scene displays properly. 

Two is that one is that the scene displays properly at first then the avatar layer appears while the scene is playing. 

The third result is that the avatar layer and the media display from the start of the scene, to the end. 

Is there a method to delete the avatar layer without deleting the entire scene?  I tried that but then the entire scene and script were gone and I couldn't just add new media by itself.
